Ymene Chetouane

Tunisian ceramicist, Ymene Chetouane will display 'Lollipops', a series of sculpted baby heads which, chimeric in appearance, reflect on the position of women in Tunisian society as well the wider Arab world.

Treated as disposable goods, infantilized and trapped within a set gendered trajectory, Chetouane’s babies reflect on the artist’s perception of issues relating to human nature, prescribed gender roles, citizenship, politics, power, and religion, amongst others. Profoundly visually destabilising, Chetouaune’s baby heads are recognisably human and yet distinctly faceless, allowing us to identify with them whilst also feeling responsible for their disfiguration.

Ymene lives and works in Tunis where she is represented by Le Violon Bleu gallery.
