Meriem Bennani

Avant-garde Hijab designer, 'Fardaous Funjab' is the eponymous subject of Meriem Bennani's video portrait. Bennani comments playfully on the possibility of negotiating a relationship between fashion and religion for 21st century Muslims, focusing too on the aesthetic expression of female sexuality.

ARA-B-LESS? will feature the first two first episodes of Bennani’s very own reality TV show based on the life of fictional Moroccan diva, Fardaous, whose idiosyncratic yet luxurious lifestyle sees her surrounded by eccentric clients with very modern needs. Now based in New York, having lived in France and Morocco, Meriem Bennani uses video and animation to reflect on contemporary Moroccan society and its negotiations with the western world.

Bennani's work has been featured in exhibitions at MOMA's PS1, New York, the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, MANA Contemporary and the Signal Gallery.
